Precautions to be taken while dealing with Snakes

Snake bite poison occurs when a snake bites.  The bite from venomous snake needs medical emergency. The bite from harmless snake can create serious allergic reactions or an infection.  Every year thousands of deaths and injuries due to snake bites are reported. Southeast Asia, India, Brazil and areas of Africa are the most suffering areas of snake bites. 

Venomous snake bites have different symptoms like localized pain and swelling, convulsions and nausea may lead to paralysis.  It is essential to take the victim to a medical facility immediately for emergency treatment.

Venomous Snakes
Most species of snakes are harmless. If you are unfamiliar with snakes and unable to distinguish between venomous and non-venomous ones, it is difficult to treat situations seriously. If you are unsure if the snake that bit you is venomous, treat the situation as if it was.

The lists of venomous snakes are cobra, copperhead, coral snake, cottonmouth, rattlesnake, viper, water moccasin etc. Without provocation the snakes are not aggressive towards humans.

Symptoms of snakebite

The symptom of snake bite depends on the type of snake.  The rattlesnake bites shows the symptom of immediate pain, eyelid drooping, low blood pressure, thirst, muscle weakness etc. Other snake bite symptoms are bleeding from wound, vomiting, blurred vision, convulsion, diarrhoea, dizziness, excessive sweating, fainting, fever, increased thirst, rapid pulse, tissue death.

Immediate Medical attention

It is very essential to take the victim to immediate medical care. While there are some tips you have to follow:-
Don’t allow the victim to move, because the venom moves more quickly through the body. Keep the victim calm and still. The area of bite will swell, so remove constructing clothing or jewellery, wash the wound with water, immobilize the affected area and keep it slightly elevated. Apply a firm bandage to 2-4 inch above the bite. Not allow the person to walk, carry the victim by a vehicle. If snake is dead, take it along for identification. Do not waste time hunting it down, though. Continuously monitor the pulse, respiration and blood pressure.

Preventive steps

Most snakes avoid human contacts and prefer to escape rather than attack.  So do not try to kill a snake, if you spot one leave it alone.  Try to familiarize with the snakes in your area and understand whether it is venomous or not. If you are walking at night make your footsteps heavy on the ground. The snake detects the vibration and stay away from your path. If you are visiting bushy area or doing gardening, cutting grass carry a stick with you. Before starting your work move the stick and make sure there are no snakes and give time for them to escape. Rubbish and food attract rats, so keep it away from your house; otherwise snake will reach to hunt rats.  Snakes are often hidden in holes or hidden spots.  You should be cautious while climbing rocks or exploring in caves. Do not put your hand into pits while  trekking.
